Starting Sentences with Conjunctions

　English teachers used to teach us that we should never start sentences with “And” or “But”. I kept the rule in my mind, and avoided starting sentences with conjunctions no matter what. However, I’m not sure if this rule still applies these days as I sometimes read sentences with “And” or “But” at the beginning.

　For example, I often see sentences starting with conjunctions on personal blogs. It is OK because these blogs are mostly personal, and an informal style suits them. What is more, I often see “But” at the beginning of the sentences in The Economist articles. I thought the British were strict on grammatical rules. I tentatively used “But” at the beginning of a sentence in my LingQ submission today, but the teacher didn’t correct me. At that time, “but” seemed a better choice than “however”. Is it OK to use conjunctions at the beginning of sentences in informal situations?

　文頭のButについて。文章の最初に、and や but などの接続詞は使ってはいけないと習ったので、長いことどんな状況でもButを文頭に用いないように気を使ってきました。ですが実際ネイティブが書いた文章では結構文頭のButを見かけます。ブログや小説など、話し言葉がそのまま文章になったようなinformalな状況では文頭のButも大丈夫なんだと思いますが、意外なことにThe Economist で文頭のButを時々見かけるんですよね〜。イギリス人は文法にうるさいのかと思っていました。ただし、学術的な論文では文頭のButはみかけませんし、Andが文の最初にくる例はブログやカジュアルな文章でもあまりみかけません。文頭にButを使っていいかどうかの判断についてずっと気になっていたので、カナダ人の先生とアメリカ人の先生に聞いてみました。

　お二人とも、昔のように絶対に使ってはいけないというような厳しさはなくなってきていると思う、と仰っていました。ブログ、小説、email, エディトリアルはOKだけど、カバーレターや、テストの英作文、学術的な文章には使わないほうがよいだろうとのこと。”絶対にダメ”とルールにこだわって、クリエイティビティを損なわないように、とアドバイスをいただきました。文頭のButは、使い過ぎると幼稚な文章になってしまいますが、前の文章との違いを強く出したい時などは使ってもいいのではないかと感じました。
