【多読】How to Write a Lot

１０月に読んだ本。今年はほとんどブログにブックレビューを書かなかったので、思い出せる分だけでも今から書こうと思う。

How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writingは、大学院生や大学教員など、論文やグラント申請を書く必要がある人に向けに書かれた、「たくさん書く」方法論に焦点を絞った本。「良い文章を書くこと」の具体論にはほとんど触れられていないが、まずは書かないことには始まらないので、書く習慣をつけるために読んだ。この本で繰り返し述べられているのは、「書くスケジュールを決め、とにかく予定を遂行すること」。書く時間がない、何も思いつかない、は言い訳でしかない。「書かないと」と思っているだけではなかなか実行に移せないし、罪悪感だけが募り、ますます書けないという悪循環に陥ってしまう。自分の場合は仕事が終わり、帰宅する前に書いてしまうのが一番良さそう。お腹もすいたし、家に帰って一息ついてから・・・と思っても実行できた試しがない。この本を読んだからには実行あるのみ！

How to Write a Lot

My motivation to write is driven by deadlines and guilt for not writing regularly. That’s why I bought “How to Write a Lot”, written by Paul J. Silvia, to build a good writing habit.

After I read this book, I am motivated to write a lot! “The key to becoming a prolific writer is making a schedule to write”, the author said in this book repeatedly. He also listed all the excuses that unproductive writers use. These excuse are: I can’t find time to write, I need to do some more analyses first, I need a new computer, and I’m waiting until I feel like it. These were so familiar to me, so I was afraid that he had somehow spied on me to describe this unproductive lazy cow.

How frustrating it was to have it pointed out that these were all excuses, but it’s true. These were what prevented me from writing a lot. From now on, I won’t find time to write, I’ll make time to write. It seems better to stick to a schedule, so I’ve decided to write at my work place before I go home!
