【読書中】Winter of the World

今読んでいる本。Ken FollettのWinter of the World: Book Two of the Century Trilogy。Fall of Giantsの続編で、Century Trilogyの２作目。前回は第一次世界大戦の前後がテーマで、今回は1930年台、ナチスの台頭するドイツを中心とした、第二次世界大戦時代のお話です。Century Trilogyというからには、1900年台初頭から現代までを描くのではないかと思いますが、100年間のうちの大部分が、戦争前の政局不安と、戦争と、戦争後のド貧乏で成り立っているというのは改めて考えると驚きでした。これまで年代記号でしかなかった歴史上の出来事を、作中の登場人物の生涯を通じて自分もその時代に生きているかのように感じることが出来るKen Follettの作品が大好き。

ハードカバーで960ページという、凶器になりそうなボリュームですが、好きな作品だと全然苦になりません。初めてKen Follett の作品を読んだ4年前は、その分厚さに怯みましたが、読み続けていれば読めるようになるものだな・・と感慨深いです。英語の長文を読むには、単語と文法をしっかりすること、というアドバイスはよく聞きますが、”慣れ” も同じくらい大事だと思います。

I’m currently reading “Winter of the World”, a sequel to “Fall of Giants” by Ken Follett. When I first read one of his bestselling novels, “Pillars of the Earth”, it wasn’t an easy read although the book was fascinating. I love his historical novels, but his books were intimidatingly long, and the vocabulary was a little bit challenging at that time. It was 2008, and now I feel quite comfortable reading his latest novel. I feel that six years of reading experience has come to fruition. I need to keep learning new words, but I’m confident enough that if I keep reading, my reading ability will get better!
