Economic downturn and centenarians

Japanese government declared a budget cut on centenarians.
Traditionally, Prime minister the
Prime Minister send
s a letter and a congratulatory silver cup each year to elderly people who turn 100 years old every year.

Japan boasts the highest longevity in the world. The number of people  who become 100 years old has been increasing. When the  congratulating  system began in 1963, the number of 100 years old people is was 153. Now, nearly 20,000 people celebrate their 100th birthday every year. The budget amount is limited, the government has decided to turn down reduce the size of the silver cup. The government paid 140,000,000 yen to  celebrate the old last year. It is estimated that 40,000,000 yen will  be saved by downsizing reducing the size of the silver cup.

The government said it was because the mainstream sizing  of the silver cup has become smaller than the past. It is an absurd  excuse! Everyone assumed that it is due to the economic downturn. It is  still rare to live up to 100 years old, we should show respect to them.  It will be a good memorial for the old to be honored by a prime minister. I hope we can celebrate all the centenarians with the full size silver cup.
