現在の単語年齢はいくつ？

なぼむしさんに教えてもらった語彙数測定サイト。測定の方法によって語彙数は違うのですが、以前読んだコチラの記事では、英語ネイティブの語彙数は75,000語、その中でアクティブなのは50,000語とありました。いくつか記事をあたってみたところ、アクティブな語彙数が60,000語と書いてあるものもありましたが、だいたい教養ある大人の語彙数は75,000語あたりであると思われます。

 

先ほどのサイトでは、辞書からランダムに選ばれた単語で少なくとも１つの意味を知っているものをチェックしてきます。なんとなく見たことがある・・程度の単語はチェックしてはいけません。２ページほど単語チェックをした後、簡単なバックグラウンド情報を入力すると、派生語を含まない語彙数のレベルが表示されます。入力欄が空欄でも結果を見ることが出来ます。複数回テストする場合は２回目以降は空欄のほうがサーベイする側にとっては良いようです。

 

英語ネイティブ、英語の学習者の両者を含め20万人がこのテストを受けており、統計から現在の自分の単語数がネイティブであれば何歳にあたるのか、SATレベルではどのくらいかをコチラのページのグラフで見ることができます。テストの結果、私の語彙数は20,600語でした。こちらのサイトでは派生語等を含まない語彙サイズが測定されており、英語学習者の平均は2,500から9,000語、英語ネイティブは20,000から35,000語とのことです。

 

グラフをたどってみると、私の語彙サイズはだいたい15歳から16歳にあてはまりました。

 

これは自分の体感レベルとピッタリでした。洋書を読む時に小・中学生向けの本は日本語で読むのと変わらない感覚で読め、大人用のベストセラーも辞書をひかずに読みますが、バックグラウンド知識のない政治・経済、科学系の記事は知らない単語が満載で深く理解するためには辞書を必要とします。

 

ネイティブでも16歳と22歳の単語数には大きな開きがあります。しかも40歳位まで順調に伸び続けています。大学入学準備のための勉強や、大学入学後に大量の資料読み込み、レポート作成をこなすことで、飛躍的に語彙力が伸びたのではないかと思います。

 

V-SATのグラフで見てみると、語彙数20,000語そこそこでは500。800レベルの人とは10,000語の隔たりがあります。

 

どんなものでもある程度読みこなせるようになるまで後10,000語必要なことがわかりました。今のレベルが16歳で、これから大学受験、大学生での授業で語彙を獲得するのと同じくらいであると仮定すると結構な労力です。しかし、語彙はやればやっただけ見返りがあります。たくさん読み、読んだ中から単語を覚えると、次からの読書がどんどんと楽になっていきます。効果を実感出来ると、単調なボキャビルも続けられると思います。

 

このボキャビルテストと解析結果は、多読でどれくらいのレベルのものを読めばいいかを判断するのにも使えそうです。語彙サイズからネイティブ相当の年齢が分かれば、Amazonなどで本の対象年齢が書かれていますので、子供用・ヤングアダルト向けの本を読んでいる、初級〜中級レベルの学習者は参考になるのでは。

 

 

According to a survey of vocabulary size in native English speakers, college graduates have 75,000 passive words, in which 60,000 are actively used. Since acquiring as much vocabulary as possible is one of my goals in learning English, I have been interested in how many words I had learned over these years.

 

My friend, Naomi, introduced me to a website, which enables us to estimate our vocabulary size by counting randomly chosen words from a dictionary. Over 200,000 people, including both native speakers and foreign English learners, have already taken the test, and the estimation was derived using the statistics. Without including word derivatives and phrases, the average word number falls between 20,000-35,000 for native English speakers, and 2,500 – 9,000 for learners of English in this test.

 

I was found to have 20,600 words, which is equivalent to 15- to 16-year-old English native speakers.  The number seems plausible, because I can comfortably read young adult books or bestsellers, but find it difficult to read complicated news articles without a dictionary. When looking back, I was able to read bestsellers when I was a junior high school student, and started to read classics or challenging non-fiction in high school. My reading level in English is almost the same as when I was 15.

 

I’ve been trying to memorize new words from my reading materials using LingQ flashcards for 4 years. As a non-native speaker of English, lack of knowledge of common words such as sleet, tap water and lapel, as well as advanced SAT words, makes my comprehension of the language patchy. Judging from the aforementioned graph, there is a big gap between 16 years old and 22 years old among the English-speaking population. Students must work hard on their SAT preparation and start using more advanced words at the university.

 

Since I’m now a “16-year-old” girl in terms of English vocabulary, I should work hard to become a full-fledged adult. Memorizing new words seemed to be an ordeal, however, the effort surely bears fruit in many ways.

 

This information will help English learners to know their level, and will be an excellent guide when choosing books appropriate for them.
