The Making of Modern Medicine

以前BBCラジオ４で放送されていた”The Making of Modern Medicine” をAudibleでダウンロードして聞いてます。紀元前から現代までの医学を6時間程にまとめたもの。信じられない原始的な治療法から病院の始まりなどがわかりやすく構成されていておもしろいです。

Bloodlettingは西洋ではとてもpopularな治療法だったらしいのですが、全く聞いたことがなかったです。どんな病気でも失神するまで血を抜く･･･聞きながら力が抜けてきました。輸血に関する実験で羊の血を自分に輸血してみた医師がいたとか･･･。　日本ではどうだったんでしょう？オランダの医学が日本に入ってくる以前の医学史についての本がないかな～、と図書館に行ってみたのですが見つかりませんでした。残念。

BBCラジオ４は様々な歴史や科学などの番組が充実していてオススメです。

Currently, I am listening to “The Making of Modern Medicine”. It is a BBC radio4 programme. I like this audiobook because it teaches tells me incredible stories of medieval medicine.

The first topic of this audiobook is the bloodletting. This “bloodletting” is not familiar to us Japanese, so I am interested in this episode. Bloodletting was a popular remedy for various diseases. It lasted almost 2000 years from ancient Greeks Greeceto 18th century. Ancient physicians punctuated punctured a patient’s blood vessel with a sharp pointed instrument and withdrew considerable amounts of blood in the hope that this would cure and prevent the onset of diseases.

We know as a modern people, that bloodletting makes patients’ conditions worse.Although However, I can understand that in the absence of any other effective remedy, ancient people might have thought that it was better to do something than to do nothing at all.
