The environmental issue that most concerns civilization

There are many environmental issues we have to solve. For example, the depletion of the ozone layer, pollution, and exploitation of natural resources. However, I think global warming is the most worrying issue of all because it causes a wide range of problems all over the world.

Firstly, mean global temperatures have been rising rapidly over the past 100 years. Although some scientists think it is due to the natural cycles of the earth, it occurred after the industrial revolution. If the temperature rises at the current speed, it will cause the ice caps to melt. The sea level will rise and many people have to migrate to higher lands. It will cause a serious problem for both the migrants and the natives.

Secondly, precipitation patterns will change due to global warming. The desert will expand in some countries, and the frequency of flooding and hurricanes will increase. This will cause crops to fail and spoil harvests. As a consequence, a shortage of food will spread all over the world.

Thirdly, the rise of temperature makes it difficult for many species to adapt to the environment . Many species will die out if global average temperature rise more than 2 degrees Celsius. Species diversity will be lost, the change of ecosystem will affect our lives directly. Pollination of crops by insects and water purification will be lost accordingly.

In conclusion, global warming is the most worrying issue. We have to reduce the amount of carbon emissions.(??) Global warming is a pressing problem because it will damage the future environment badly. Effort must be made to stop global warming by capping carbon emissions, using alternative energy and so on (???). At the same time, we have to prepare to adapt to the environmental change.

先週参加した環境問題クラス後の英作文です。ディスカッション前に、話したいことのキーワードや話の流れをメモしておいて、ディスカッション後に作文にまとめるようにしています。ちょっと手間がかかるんだけど、この方法はスピーチの際に本当に役立ちました。添削後の文章の暗唱までいけば完璧なんでしょうけどそこまでは出来ていません。自分で書いた文章といえども、なかなか覚えられないので暗誦はギブアップ！試験前にモデルスピーチを数十本暗記したという方の根性は本当にスゴイと思います。

さて、今回の作文ではlots ofをmanyに添削されました。lots ofは英作文で使うにはカジュアルすぎるからダメなんですって。あと結論の部分で、環境問題の解決方法として二酸化炭素の削減を書いたんですけどこれはばっさり切り捨てられました　理由は”You have not mentioned any link between carbon emissions and global warming yet. The conclusion should not be introducing new facts.”　だそうです。作文のBody部分までに触れなかったことは結論にいれちゃダメみたい。地球温暖化の解決策の例として挙げたつもりが蛇足だったようです。そんなルールがあったなんて今まで知らなかった！　ちゃんとしたライティングの本を読んだことがないので、近いうちに購入しようと思います。
