【感想】
日本で大層な評判となっているだけあって、すごく面白かったです！！！肝が座った女性が主人公の話が大好き。何を言ってもネタバレになるので大っぴらに語れないのが残念ですが…。
どんでん返しを期待して読んだ人のなかには、ガッカリしたという感想もチラホラ見かけたのですが、この本の良さはどんでん返しにあるのではなく、犯人と一緒に事件を追っていく事が出来るということだと思うのです。アレックスが仕掛けた一連の事件に対して警察がどう反応するのか、自らが審判を待っているかのようにドキドキしました。truthよりもjusticeというセリフには激しく納得です。
一作目のIreneを読まなくても十分楽しめるとは思いますが、1作目を読んでいたほうが、主人公Camilleが負ったトラウマの深さが分かるので良いと思います。画家であるお母さんへの思い入れの強さも分かりますし。
Camille率いる捜査陣も相変わらず個性的。今回主要メンバーに加わったArmandのドケチぶりには参りました。読んでいるこちらが恥ずかしくなるほどの倹約ぶり。このご時世にホームレスでもないのにシケモクを集める人がいるとは・・・。それらのドケチエピソードの数々があったからこそ、芸術への傾倒ぶりがますます際立ったのだと思いました。
なぜかオーディオブック版はデンマーク語しかなかったので、Kindle版で読みました。内容とは関係ないのだけれど、この作品、やたらとセミコロンが多いのです。セミコロンの使い方を思う存分確認出来た本でした。

Commandant Camille Verhoeven and his team had no clues about finding the woman until a series of brutal murders presumably committed by a mysterious woman started.

I knew that Alex by Pierre Lemaitre received critical acclaim internationally and I enjoyed its prequel, Irene, but this book was beyond my expectations. The book starts with an abduction of a beautiful woman; however, readers soon realize that the woman, Alex, is not a mere victim. She had a reason to be punished by the perpetrator. But what was the reason?
Following Alex’s narrow escape from the cage, she goes on a killing spree; it looks completely random, and the motive is not revealed until the very end. Alex is a serial killer; but her loneliness and the determination to kill felt so sad that I sympathized with her. I couldn’t help but hope that she would never get caught.
Commandant Camille Verhoeven and his team is another reason that makes this book unique; Commandant Camille, a man with a diminutive stature of only four feet eleven inches, was traumatized by a tragedy that fell upon his family a few years earlier. This abduction case was a harsh reminder of what happened to his wife, Irene. His second in command, Louis, shares the guilt with Camille, and their relationship seems to have changed since the tragic event. Armand, one of the detectives, is capable of finding anything, but he is a cadger; he is embarrassingly stingy, but his dedication to art is remarkable. He skimps on everything but art.
The ending is brilliant. I couldn’t agree more when one of the characters said, “As far as we’re concerned, what’s important is not truth, it’s justice.” This ending was what I hoped for, albeit a sad one. This book was dark, sad, and disturbing, absolutely the kind I like the most. I’m really looking forward to the third book in this series, Camille, coming out in May.
