What would I feel if I had a glimpse of my future? I’d love to see if I’ll be happy with my family in years to come, but what if I will be single and penniless? It’s controversial, and thinking of my future was thrilling while reading Flash Forward.

In this book, scientists conducted a high energy experiment which caused an unexpected global blackout for 2 minutes. People suddenly fell unconscious while their minds were flash forwarded (as they coined the word for the blackout) to 21 years in the future. During the blackout, hundreds of airplanes crashed, cars collided, surgeries were botched, and millions of people lost their lives.

There were people who were elated by seeing favorable futures and devastated by facing miserable outcomes, but worst of all were those who saw nothing during the blackout, which means they would be not around in 21 years. Theo, one of whom carried out the experiment, was among those who had no vision. On top of this, he knew some people watched news about his murder. Obsessed with the possible future, he spent his next 21 years preventing the event in desperation.

Before reading this book, I craved to see my future, but as the author quotes, “He who foresees calamities suffers them twice over.” It seems better to embrace the uncertainty. While contemplating my future, I felt like part of myself was being flash forwarded with the leading characters. This book brought me an excitement along with deep insight about life which makes the reading more diverting.
