面白かったです。アメリカ５０州で５０週かけて５０の仕事に挑戦した２０代の若者の体験談。しかも仕事はそれぞれの州の文化や特徴をよく表しているものを選んでいるのが面白いところ。例えばサウスダコタ州ではロデオ場のアナウンサー、ミネソタ州では医療機器関係の仕事、インディアナ州ではカーレースのピットクルーなど。それぞれの州には文化的、経済的な背景により様々な違いがあり、そこに住んでいる人たちの特徴も違うことがわかります。

旅に出る前に全部の仕事が決まっていたわけではありません。次の州の仕事を探しながらの旅。当然ながら職にありつける保証も、寝る場所もお金もありません。しかも不景気！毎回何十件も電話で職を探し、ありとあらゆる知り合いのコネを頼り、時には地下鉄でお気に入りの野球チームのTシャツを着ていた人に声をかけたことから仕事をゲットします。そんなことが出来るなんて、もとから社交的でデキる人だったに違いないと思いきや、作者のダニエルは２５歳まで定職につかず、訪問販売などをしていた冴えない若者だったようです。ところが、50 Jobs in 50 Statesというアイデアを思いついてから、その夢を実現するために失敗を恐れずに挑戦を続けました。そして自らの売り込みもありましたが、旅を続けるうちに注目されるようになり、Yahooやテレビニュースで取り上げられるまでになります。

どの州でも歓迎されたわけではなかったし、正直あんたのその態度どうなのよ？というような、感謝のない横柄な態度をとったこともあります。それでもたくさんの人に会い、人々や経験から学ぶことで多くのことを得て成長しています。ダニエルの奮闘ぶりから、失敗を恐れずにチャレンジすること、失敗から学ぶことの大切さが伝わってきます。

この本は、英語学習をしている人に特にオススメです。５０州の特徴をあらわすステレオタイプというものがよく説明されているからです。例えば南部の人のほうが親切だとか、ミシシッピあたりに特に貧乏な地域があるとか、風邪をひいて非常に具合が悪くなって薬局に行っても、”風邪は自然に直すしかないよ”と言われて余計な薬は処方されない、などなど。アメリカ人にとって当たり前のことでも、私たち日本人にとっては初めて聞く話が多いと思います。日本で例えるならば、”東北は米どころで、人々は我慢強い”というイメージがあるけれども外国人でそのことを知っている人はそれほど多くない、というところでしょうか。英語を学習しながら文化も学べ、失敗を恐れずに何か大きいことにチャレンジしたい！と好奇心も刺激される良い本でした。

For job applicants, now is a hard time to find a decent job. Daniel Seddiqui was one of many college grads who received countless rejections from various companies. People are discouraged when receiving rejections, but what makes Daniel different was he turned adversity into brilliant success. Against all odds and risks, he set out on a reckless journey to fulfill his dream: 50 jobs in 50 states in 50 weeks.

Upon departing, he bought a car to travel all over the country and find several jobs ahead of the journey. Other than that, he had no guarantee for the next job, accommodations, nor salary. He chose a job that represented the culture and economy of each state, which makes this quest more impressive. The work varied from rodeo announcer in South Dakota, medical device company in Minnesota, pit-crew worker in Indiana, and so on.

Exploring multiple careers in different places made him realize that there were diverse cultures and lifestyles in his country. By understanding other people, he backed off some stereotypes, compared himself to others, and above all, learned a lot from people.

I received important messages form this book. These are: don’t be afraid of making mistakes, take risks, and accept uncertainty. Despite rejections and failures, he focused on his goal. Each experience lead him to progress. If we stay in our comfort zone and avoid uncertainty, we will miss the chances to make ourselves better. His experience convinced me that it is OK to make mistakes as long as I learn from them.

As a foreigner, stereotypes in each state were very interesting, and I enjoyed every description of all the states. I didn’t know people from southern states tend to be kind, Mississippi has a reputation of poor health, and Pennsylvania has a large Amish population. I didn’t have the faintest idea what Amish was, and I was bewildered by their lives. There were many common ideas for American people but foreign to me, and I appreciated all the information from this book. The way he described stereotypes was also hilarious. For example, foods in Mississippi are brown because they are fried foods and have more calories.

This book encouraged me to challenge various things, and it also helped me understand more about American culture and people.
