銀河バイパス建設のため、ある日突然地球が取り壊されてしまう。15年間秘密裏に地球で活動していた宇宙人の友人、フォード・プリフェクトに助けられたイギリス人、アーサー・デントは、彼とともに銀河系ヒッチハイクの旅に出る。
【感想】
バカバカしくて面白かった！銀河系ヒッチハイクのお供は”The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”という電子本とタオル。銀河系ガイドブックの表紙には、”Don’t Panic”と書いてある。何が起こるか分からない宇宙でのヒッチハイクに出かける者にとって、”パニクるな”というのは尤も至極な助言だろう。
タオルの独創的な使い方にも感心した。暖を取る、体を清潔にする、という以外にも濡らして戦いに挑むという使い方があったとは。本当に宇宙では何が起こるか分からない。
留まるところを知らない奇想天外な発想に辟易して途中で本を置いてしまう人もいるようだが、この本は各方面に多大な影響を与えているらしい。例えば作中に出てくるBabel Fishという魚。耳にこの黄色い魚を挿せばたちどころに他言語を翻訳してくれるという生き物なのだが、Babel Fishという機械翻訳ソフトがあるらしい。他にも、Pan-Galactic Gargle Blastersという名の飲み物も各種レシピがあるし、Deep Thoughtという人間とチェスの対戦をするコンピューターもあった。さらにはGoogle計算機に”The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything”というこの作品のテーマである究極の質問をすると答えが導き出される。Geekたちの想像力を大いに刺激する1冊だったのではないだろうか。
私はStephen Fry朗読のオーディオブック版を聞いた。淡々としたナレーションの中に何かが起こりそうな雰囲気を忍ばせているところが良い。シニカルなイギリス風ユーモアが各所に散りばめられているところ、そしてそのユーモアが相方の宇宙人には全く通じていない所も微笑ましい。
次々と起こるトンデモナイ出来事に振り回されつつも、Stephen Fryの飄々としたナレーションで読み上げられるユーモアに笑いっぱなしだった。
Book Review: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
On the day of the demolition of the Earth, Arthur Dent was picked up from the planet by his friend, Ford Prefect, an alien researcher working incognito on the revised version of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.
The author of this highly acclaimed book put the words, “Don’t Panic” on the cover, which must be an important piece of advice for those who are brave enough to try hitchhiking in the universe. This guidebook also explains, “A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. You can wrap it around you for warmth or wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat.” Now I understand the reason why “Don’t Panic” should be on the cover; anything can happen in the galaxy.
Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect, a peculiar pair, escaped the earth, were thrown out of a spaceship, and were picked up by another spaceship against astronomical odds. They then stumbled upon the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything. The plot is rather simple, but I like the way the author, Douglas Adams, put the words together; they are sarcastic and funny. His writing style, along with complete nonsense, set the tone of the story, and somehow made sense. I was awestruck by the answer to the ultimate question, and I found it profound beyond human wisdom.
Some readers might feel this story is pure hokum and put the book down, but this book exerted a tremendous impact not only on writers, but also on geeks. “Babel fish” that translates foreign languages became real software, Babel Fish. Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters is a popular cocktail menu item, and the name Deep Thought, a computer programmed to calculate the answer to the ultimate question, was adopted as a chess computer. Also, when we put the ultimate question to Google Calc, it taps out the answer written in this book.
I really love this book, and definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi and humor. This is a rare chance to experience hitchhiking in the galaxy, and I wouldn’t miss it for anything.
