【あらすじ】

パリで2人の娼婦が惨殺された。事件を担当することになったカミーユ・ヴェルーヴェン警部は、今回の事件と過去の未解決事件を結びつけ、シリアルキラーによる犯行の可能性があることを突き止める。連続殺人犯は、過去に出版された犯罪小説の殺人現場を完璧に再現していた。

 

カミーユはWebsiteを通じて、”The Novelist”と名付けられた連続殺人犯と連絡を取り始めるのだが、この事により、犯人とカミーユとの間に個人的な関係が生じる。

 

【感想】

フランス人作家、ピエール・ルメートルによる、カミーユ・ヴェルーヴェン警部シリーズ3部作の1作目。シリーズ2作目の「その女アレックス」が大層な評判だったので、シリーズ1作目から読んでみることにしました。フランス版は、1. Travail soigné（丁寧な仕事）、2. Alex (その女アレックス),  3. Sacrificeで、英語版は、1. Irene, 2. Alex, 3. Camile のようです。

 

クライム小説の殺人現場を詳細に模倣する”The Novelist” というシリアルキラーを追う話。本作で紹介されていた、ブラック・ダリアやアメリカン・サイコを読まねば！という気持ちになりました。

 

主人公の警部は148cmの小男。ミステリーシリーズの主人公に期待されそうなハンサムで自信家な男でもなく、ハードボイルド的なカッコ良さでもない。独特の雰囲気が醸しだされていて、身体的な劣等感がかいま見える点が良かったです。

 

2作目であるAlexのあらすじを読んでしまうと、なぜカミーユが心に大きな傷を負っているかが分かってしまい、1作目の最大のネタバレになってしまうので注意。

 

シリーズ1冊目を読み、その女アレックスを半分程読んだところなのですが、確かにその女アレックスは面白い。1作目のIrene/Travail soigné（丁寧な仕事）は、まぁまぁ普通のミステリといった感じでした。私は「その女アレックス」のあらすじを先に読んでしまい、最後に何が起きるのかを知っていたにもかかわらず、それでも最後まで緊張感を持って読むことが出来ました。

 

 Book Review: Irene

Plot:

Two prostitutes were brutally murdered in Paris. Commandant Camille Verhoeven, a diminutive man of only four feet eleven inches, realized that the crime scene was a pastiche from a classic crime novel, American Psycho. With help from an eccentric bookseller, Camille soon found out that it was a serial killer, who paid homage to crime novels, and re-enacted the murder scenes faithfully. Camille challenged “The Novelist” by posting a message to him, which made the case personal.

 

My Thoughts:

Irene is the first book of the Verhoeven Trilogy, but its sequel Alex was first translated from French to English. Following Alex’s phenomenal success, Irene was introduced to the U.S. The reason why Commandant Camille is deeply traumatized is revealed in Alex’s synopsis, which spoils the climax of Irene. I knew what happens to the main character, but still, I was fascinated by the turn of events.

 

The novelist appreciates crime novels. He was meticulous, and his description of the bodies was beautifully presented to the police. It was morally wrong to reenact the murder scenes, but it piqued an interest in the original novels, American Psycho and The Black Dahlia.

 

The characters are well developed in this book. Commandant Camille seems insecure because of his diminutive size, but he is smart and capable. Louis, his second-in-command, is handsome and somewhat naïve. Unlike gun-wielding macho American detectives, their insecurities seem to make this series more realistic and reasonable.

 

It seems that this series is getting better, and I can’t wait to read the second book, Alex.
