【あらすじ】
ウエスト・ヴァージニア州の炭鉱の田舎町で一家惨殺事件が起こる。被害者の1人が大佐だったため、軍の特別捜査官であるプラーが派遣され、地元の女性巡査サマンサ・コールと共に事件解決に挑む。
【感想】
AudibleでPullerシリーズの3作目がかなりの高評価を得ていたので、1作目のZero Dayから聞き始めてみました。前半はかなり退屈。田舎町での連続殺人事件に、この主人公はオーバースペックすぎる！ところが、そうこうするうちに、これは単なる田舎の殺人事件ではなく、国家の安全を揺るがす大事件であることがわかるのです。
それにしても主人公のアメリカン・ヒーロー仕立てには驚きました。ジョン・プラーは中東帰りのコンバットベテラン。父は伝説的な軍人で、兄も空軍に属する物理学者だったのですが、現在は国家に対するtreasonの罪で軍の刑務所に収監されています。Pullerは多国語を操り、アフガンでは数々の修羅場をくぐり抜けてきた男。本来であれば出世コースなのですが、現場主義の本人の意向により、出世とはかけ離れたInvestigatorをしているという設定。なんだか万能すぎませんか・・・。
更にはPuller家の男の第一信条は泣かないこと・・とかいうマッチョぶりに少し萎えてしまいました。戦場で仲間を救えなかった事でトラウマを抱えている・・というのもアメリカン・ヒーローのお約束なのでしょうか。
この本で興味深かったのは、ウェスト・ヴァージニア州の炭鉱の田舎町の様子が良く描かれている事でした。喫煙率が高い・・と思ったら、ウェスト・ヴァージニア州は全米でも１、２を争う喫煙率の高さ。2011年の喫煙率は28.6％で、妊婦さんでも1/4以上が妊娠中に喫煙するそうです。ミシガン州出身のアメリカ人上司が、世間話の拍子に「ウェスト・ヴァージニア州には住みたくない！貧乏だから！！」と言っていたのを思い出しました。フィクションだけれども、当地の様子が反映されているのかも。
色々と突っ込みどころはあるものの、展開がスリリングなのでそれなりに楽しんで読みました。この世界観に慣れれば大げさなバックグラウンドも気にならなくなるのかも。シリーズが進むにつれて評価が高くなっているようなので、続きも読もうと思います。

When a retired colonel and his family are brutally murdered in a small mining town in West Virginia, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sends a war hero, John Puller, to investigate the case. With help of the local detective, Samantha Cole, Puller soon realizes that there is a calamitous scheme that will destabilize the safety of the country.

Zero Day by David Baldacci is the first book in the John Puller series whose third book is currently on the bestseller list on Audible. Although I felt that the protagonist, John Puller is too cliché, I enjoyed this fast paced thriller.
John Puller is a combat veteran who had survived several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. His father was a legend in the military, and his older brother, an ex Air Force nuclear scientist, is serving a life sentence for treason in a military prison. Although he has an impeccable reputation as the best investigator in the army, he is traumatized by the wartime experience in the Middle East. He couldn’t save his fellow soldiers; the remorse he feels seems to have kept him in pursuit of an advanced career.
As the murder case that took place in a rural mining town in West Virginia involves a retired colonel, the Army CID sends Puller from D.C. While he is investigating the crime scene in the middle of night, he stumbles upon the strangled body of a police officer. The perpetrator of murder of the colonel’s family came back to the murder scene to look for something important, and killed the officer on guard duty. What is more, the couple next door, who worked for the mining company, were also killed. A letter that was addressed to the dead colonel is missing, and it turns out that the missing piece of mail was a geological survey of the soil in the town.
I first thought that Puller was over-qualified for this murder case. He speaks several languages, he seems to be good at hand-to-hand combat, and he is truly patriotic. As the story progressed, however, it became apparent that there is much more going on in this rural mining town. There have been several life threatening attempts against Puller by professional killers, a devastating terrorist scheme is revealed, and a hidden nuclear facility underneath the town is suspected. Puller has to cope with all this with a local detective named Cole, because if the authorities send in an army, it could scare off the terrorists… No wonder Puller should be a super hero.
There were several “too good to be true!” moments in this book, but this is fiction after all. I was skeptical of a traumatized patriotic ex-soldier hero figure, but all in all, I was thrilled by this book. I’m looking forward to proceeding to the second book, The Forgotten, soon.
